Chemical Safety Announces Environmental Breakthrough in Route Management

Chemical Safety celebrates breakthrough environmental initiative by two of its most important client partners.

NREL and Google Maps Team Up to Reduce Emissions and Combat Climate Change.

Chemical Safety Software is proud to announce that their client, the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has teamed up with Google on a new initiative of eco-friendly destination routing. Google Maps, in addition to showing drivers the fastest way to get to their destination, will also show the route that’s most fuel-efficient.

To provide this new feature, Google incorporated NREL’s Route Energy Prediction Model (RouteE), which predicts the energy consumption of a given vehicle over a proposed route. The data-informed model accounts for driving conditions such as anticipated traffic congestion, traffic speed, road type (including number of lanes), road grade, and turns.

The Google partnership will leverage both RouteE and FASTSim technologies on top of Google’s own datasets and artificial-intelligence capabilities and routing algorithms such as real-time traffic predictions. Google Maps eco-routing integration will serve as one component of Google’s broader sustainability efforts. Once fully operational, NREL anticipates conducting an objective assessment to see how well the eco-routing capability is working and to help further refine and improve it, as necessary.

Google estimates that eco-friendly routing has the potential to prevent more than one million tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere per year. That’s the equivalent of removing 200,000 cars from the road.

The most eco-friendly route will be displayed with a small green leaf next to it. The route option will include information about how long the trip will take and how much fuel the driver could save.

Chemical Safety has been responsible in developing and implementing technologies that ensure the safe acquisition, use, storage and disposal of hazardous materials at both NREL and Alphabet sites in multiple locations across the US.  Chemical Safety’s Environmental Management Systems (EMS) is the industry’s most comprehensive set of tools for chemical management and reporting using cloud-based and mobile technology tools.  EMS also manages Safety Data Sheets (SDS), GHS Labeling, Audits, Inspections and has built in tools for streamlined and accurate regulatory reporting to Federal, State and local agencies.
